Beatrice Clark has run out of options...

She must escape her dangerous fiancé by ruining her reputation before the wedding can occur. Armed with a sultry red dress and a list of London's disreputable men Beatrice has one night to find the right man.

William Bradley enjoyed his nights of debauchery and found himself at home amongst London's depraved citizens. He never wanted to be the hero to any damsel in distress. But his past is working against him. Forced by his own conscience into helping Beatrice escape her future husband he is now tied into the unwanted role of a woman's savior.

The unlikely pair could fall in love, if they don't destroy each other first.

Reluctantly In Love edition by Lindsay Kiernan Romance eBooks

This is a cute idea for a period romance. The plot elements for tension are there.

The hero and heroine meet cute; the villain, the best friend, and a more creative element, the hooker-equivalent with the heart-of-gold keep the story moving.

There are few things missing for me; and I would have rated 3.5 stars if halvsies were possible.

The main characters don't come really alive for me. William is a rake; the ingenue bride is sweet. She is so forgettable that I had to look up her name, Beatrice, to write this.

I'm don't even know what the hero looks like, beyond his thick blond hair and green eyes. Is he a fop or well-dressed but careless? Where is his valet and her maid? If she was too poor to have one before she married her Lord, would he not have hired one for her?

Why does he spend his evenings, apparently, solely at Mrs. Doubard's parties picking up women. She is anachronistically referred to as Ms. but I cannot make myself do that, even for a review.

Is William no more than a lounge lizard? Wouldn't a rake also be out gambling, hanging at men's clubs, taking in some fisticuffs, out hunting and so forth?

The explanation for his determination not to sully Beatrice with sex is delayed so long that his actions were as confusing and inconsistent to me as to Beatrice. "Get on with it, man," I wanted to shout -- much like Mrs. D.

The sinister Mr. Spens is, IMHO, under-utilized.

In sum, this is a good idea for a story. With some nuanced shading of the characters, a few lines of witty dialogue that make me grin, and perhaps a bit of beefing up and working on plot details and timing, this could be a dynamite book. As it stands, it is worth a read if you like period romance.

Reluctantly In Love edition by Lindsay Kiernan Romance eBooks Reviews

In an attempt to avoid the upcoming arranged marriage to Mr. Spens, Beatrice and her cousin, Helen, devise a plan to escape from the turmoil that could be Beatrice's future...

Kiernan's writing flows from page to page, making "Reluctantly in
Love" a smooth read. Her language usage creates a clear picture of the time frame. The sexual nuances provoke thrill and intrigue. "Reluctantly in Love" was a book that I could not put down until I read the last sentence.

Kiernan proves to be a great up and coming period romance author and I look forward to reading her future work.
I really enjoyed reading this story. This book has a great plot, it's also descriptive, and truly a wonderful story. Even though the hero has a tortured soul, he's sweet, protective, and caring toward heroine. The heroine is also sweet, patient and loving toward the hero. The supporting characters are down to earth and supportive. The only thing I found negative with this book is the front cover, hope the editor, or author changes the front cover of this book.
Great Story!
I enjoyed the story stayed up to finish it. It would have been better if at the beginning we understand how this young ladies are familar with such a place as Ms. Doubard. Would have liked to have seemed more about the characters. Found four or five misspelled words but not bad. I would have also liked to have felt stronger feelings coming from the characters. The story about Emily it should have made me wept as well as the feelings Beatrice was expreincing when being abandoned and aching for children. I should have felt the action going on when William was fighting with Mr. Spens. The story line was good.
Three stars because I'm feeling generous. When I read the description it sounded like it had promise but the story was just blah. I kept reading thinking things would pick up but they didn't. I don't expect precise historical accuracy but the term Ms. wasn't even around during the time period and it was used numerous times in the first 10%. It was difficult to take the villain seriously; he seemed more of a fool.

The author seems capable of writing a good story, but I wouldn't recommend this one.
This book has an interesting plot and the romance between the h and H is really sweet. The hero, William, Lord Bradley, is a tortured soul. His first loved died as a direct result of his father's cruelty. Fearing he is just like his father, William lives the life of a dissolute rake, moving from one woman to the next, never allowing himself to get close to anyone.

The heroine, Beatrice is in a fine fix. She is being forced into marriage with a truly evil man. In order to avoid marrying Mr. Spens Beatrice, with the help of her cousin Helen, devises a plot to lose her virginity. Beatrice believes that once she is ruined, Mr. Spens will no longer wish to marry her. To that end, Helen gives Beatrice a list of potential lovers and takes her to a ball where the more debauched members of society are in attendance. The first name on her list is Lord William Bradley.

Beatrice seeks William out, only to find him surrounded by a flock of women, all vying for his attention. William is immediately drawn to Beatrice and instantly recognizes that she does not belong in such a place. Realizing that Beatrice means to lose her virginity that night, William intercedes to prevent her from carrying out her plan. William's involvement in Beatrice's life leads to a marriage in name only between the two.

William takes drastic measures to ensure Beatrice's safety, all the while fighting against his budding feelings for her. For her part, despite knowing about the debauched life which William leads, Beatrice finds herself falling in love with her husband.

To add intrigue to the plot, William and Beatrice must fend off Mr. Spens attempts to regain control of Beatrice. The book is fairly well written, although the story is a bit flat, by which I mean it didn't really come alive for me. I liked Beatrice and William well enough, but I never really felt connected to either of them. Furthermore, Mr. Spens was more cartoon caricature than real world villain.

The end result is that the story that unfolds is interesting, but not in the least bit gripping. I would read say this book is worth reading, but it's not one that would come to mind when recommending a book to a friend. Ms. Kiernan can certainly weave a good tale, but the book failed to engender any real emotion in this reader.
